looking for fresh ground
Okay, I have decided that it might be time for me to find a more dedicated blog hosting service - that is, one that uses Moveable Type and MySQL and PHP. Anyone got any suggestions?

You could use TypePad? Their URL regarding the features and pricing is: http://www.typepad.com/site/features There is also Xanga. The URL is: http://www.xanga.com/default.aspx Someone cannot comment on your blog if she/he is not a member of Xanga, however. But Xanga does offer blogrings - groups of bloggers with common interests. (I'm not sure if Xanga meets your requirments.) Out of all the blog services I've checked into, TypePad and Xanga seem to be the best.
There is also SquareSpace. I'm not sure exactly what it has to offer, but you could try it for free. The URL is: http://www.squarespace.com/do/display/external/Frontpage

Definitely TypePad. I've been using it for almost a year now (over here) and love it. Really great features (a little slow with new stuff, but pretty fantastic to start with), wonderful support and very reasonable prices. Would totally recommend it. (No, I don't work for them, honest! Just really, really like it!)
